About Alyssa

What is a Certified Nutrition Specialist?

I am a Certified Nutrition Specialist (MS, CNS) and Licensed Nutritionist (LDN). I earned my master’s degree in Clinical Nutrition and Integrative Health, passed a national board exam, and completed 1,000 hours of supervised clinical training prior to launching my private practice.

My title of Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS), is an advanced professional nutrition credential that differs from a standard Registered Dietician (RD). CNSs must have a minimum of a masters or doctorate degree in clinical nutrition, with a focus on personalized nutrition practices.

CNS’s practice personalized nutrition. Personalized nutrition (PN) considers the unique makeup of individuals and groups of people with similar traits, creating a person-centered approach to nutrition science, education and clinical care.

Why I Chose to Pursue Personalized Nutrition:

Prior to my career in integrative health, I studied and worked in politics and foreign policy in both France and Washington D.C. After a digestive illness changed my life, I experienced firsthand the benefits of integrative medicine, personalized nutrition and other healing modalities, which enabled me to reclaim my health.

While my passion for gut health began with my own symptoms, my return to graduate school and subsequent clinical training solidified the evidence-based nutritional practices I implement today. I fundamentally understand the importance of a personal food code, and emphasize bio-individuality with all of my clients, based on their specific nutrition needs as a unique individual, while taking into account their complicated health histories, allergies, intolerances and preferences.

Rooted in Mindfulness:

Drawing from my training as a Certified Meditation Instructor (200-hr) and years of experience designing and leading wellness programs, I center mindfulness at the heart of my clinical work, in support of healing the body through the mind. Targeting stress, cultivating more self-compassion, and learning to embrace change serve as pillars of support in optimizing health.

In addition to my private client work, I have hosted retreats and workshops of up to 100 people with business and firms around the country, lecturing on topics ranging from mindfulness to mindful eating, stress management, leadership and overall health. Notably, I have guided:

  • Marriott International (Bonvoy Executive Team)
  • Hilton Hotels & Resorts
  • Embassy of Canada
  • Kellogg School of Management
  • Sweetgreen
  • Young President’s Organization
  • Service Employees International Union
  • Bain Capital
